Anup Chetia, one of the founding member of ULFA ( United Liberation Front of Asom), who is in jail in Dhaka, Bangladesh may return to Assam soon, as per reports by DY365 ( A Guwahati based TV Channel in Assam). According to the report, Bangladesh Government has agreed to deport Anup Chetia once he withdraws or Bangladesh court rejects his petition seeking political asylum in Bangladesh.
Anup Chetia was arrested in Dhaka in 1997 under the Foreigners Act and the Passports Act for illegally carrying foreign currencies and a satellite phone. He was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a Bangladeshi court and was being held at Kashimpur Jail in the outskirts of Dhaka.
Anup Chetia is also known as Sunil Barua and his real name is said to be Gulap Barua.
Released ULFA chairman, Arabinda Rajkhowa is likely to write to Anup Chetia for withdrawing the political asylum petition and return to Assam to take part in Indo-ULFA peace talks.
Recently, chief of ULFA’s military wing, Paresh Barua had sent some photographs as well as video to various media houses in Assam. In the video clip, Paresh Barua is seen dancing as well as his cadres shouting pro-independence slogans. This video footage has ended speculation in Assam that Paresh Barua had been arrested and kept in a secret location by Indian intelligence agencies. This video can also be seen as display of military might by ULFA which was thought to be almost finished off after arrest of other ULFA top leaders.
Anup Chetia is said to be close to Paresh Barua and his return to Assam and participation in the peace process would be a real break through which other wise now seen as hitting a road block after Paresh Barua’s video clip.
