North East Water Regulatory Authority (NEWRA) : Assam CM approaches PM

Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Tarun Gogoi has recently met Prime Minister of India and requested him to expedite the formation of North East Water Regulatory Authority (NEWRA). The formation of this authority has been delayed as Arunachal Pradesh has been opposing it.

The Assam Government, facing lot of agitation against big dams in Arunachal Pradesh, had suggested to set up the North East Water Regulatory Authority (NEWRA) which will control all hydro power projects in the upper reaches of the river Brahmaputra.

Flood in Assam and Big Dams in North East India

Recent report says that at least 3.3lacs people in Assam’s flood prone districts Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and other districts Jorhat, Barpeta have been displaced or rendered homeless by flood. These floods were mainly caused by incessant rains in Arunachal Pradesh hills as well as in the plains of Assam.

But it is not only rain which causes flood in Lakhimpur District. Assam and whole of North East India rains well for centuries now and Cherapunji in Meghalaya boasts of the wettest place one earth. With this kind of free information available, Ranganadi dam was constructed to produce 405MW of power over Ranga nadi river Arunachal Pradesh known as Dikrong river in Lakhimpur district of Assam.

ULFA is trying to bomb Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project

ULFA is planning to plant bomb and try to sabotage Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project ( LSHELP) at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji district of Assam, according to intelligence sources.

Dhemaji superintendent of police P Kar said that a joint team of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland police and army personnel was jointly patrolling the area which is bordered by the two neighbouring states.

BJP demands Subansiri Dam construction at Gerukamukh

On 17th Nov 2010, BJP ( Bharatiya Janata Party) staged a massive protest gathering at Gerukamukh demanding a immediate halt to the ongoing construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project ( LSHELP) at Gerukamukh, Guagamukh in Dhemaji District of Assam.

Former BJP president Rajnath Singh attended the meeting which was organised by Assam BJP state unit. More than seven thousand people coming from different parts of Dhemaji Dhakuakhana, Silapathar etc. participated in the meeting.

I take this opportunity to thank CNN IBN for selecting me for the Young Indian Leaders award. This is not only a recognition of the work of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), a movement of marginalised peasants in Assam, but also a recognition for North-East India. For many, the northeast as a whole is a land inhabited by naked tribals, who have climbed the ladder of civilization only after their political affiliation with the Indian mainland, which definitely is not the case. North East Netizens Come forward to oppose Big Dams in India

Internet users, well informed politically aware in a democratic country India, youths from North East India have come out with online petition for stopping construction of big dams in seismic zone 5 rated North East India.

Update on Big Dams in North East India

Prime Minister of India Mr. Manmohan Singh will soon hold an important meeting with Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, environment minister Jairam Ramesh, water resources minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and external affairs minister S M Krishna along with deputy chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia about big dams in Arunachal Pradesh.

The agenda of the meeting is to decide if these hydro-electric projects should be put on hold till comprehensive studies are conducted to understand their impact on the state’s environment as well as the consequences downstream in neighbouring Assam, reports by Times Of India. [Read more...]

Big Dams in North East India : AASU to lead massive protest

The powerful student organisation of Assam, AASU ( All Assam Student Union) is going to lead 25 other indigenous student organisations of Assa against big dams in North East India, specially in Arunachal Pradesh. They have jointly decided to intensify the protest throughout the state.

In the two-day meeting of all the organizations that concluded today in Guwahati, decision was taken to stage a sit-in demonstration on September 30 in Guwahati, followed by a vigorous gana-satyagraha in the first week of November in the capital city opposing the big dams in North East India.
