How North East India loses being far away from New Delhi

One of the often heard comment about North East India is that it is being ignored by center, ( read New Delhi) due to its distance ( approximately 2000KM) from it. One may wonder how is that possible in this jet age and internet age where news of an earthquake in east coast of United States of America trends in India minutes after in Twitter!

And does that mean that had Calcutta ( Kolkata now a days) remained capital of India like before 1911, would North East India have got attention as much as Kashmir gets now a days ?

Garo National Liberation Army kills five labourers

In South Garo district today in the early morning at around 1:45AM, five labourers were shot dead by suspected Garo National Liberation Army ( GNLA ) millitants at Gokha coal depot, about 10 km from Baghmara, the district headquarter.

According to police sources, Four of the labourers Rambadan Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Suhagin and Habibul from Assam and Nur Mohammad from Meghalaya were killed on the spot while another labourer Jamin from Assam succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

Meghalaya spending highest on development in North East

CAG report on Meghalaya State finances for the year ended March 31, 2010 has noted that “ratio of development expenditure of Meghalaya is higher than the other northeastern states on an average, which indicates that the state is giving more priority to this category compared to other states of North East India.”

the Meghalaya government’s expenditure on health as a percentage of AE (aggregate ex-penditure) was higher than the n ortheastern states’ average during the years 2005-06 and 2009-10, whereas expenditure on education was lower, the CAG report tabled in the assembly today highlighted.

National RTI Convention in Shillong

The Meghalaya Right to Information Movement (MRTIM) will hold Third National RTI Convention in Shillong on 10th March 2011 to 12 March 2011 to be organised by NCPRI (National Campaign for Peoples’ Right to Information). The NCPRI has chosen to locate this Convention in Shillong so that it provides us with a great opportunity to learn from the significant experiences of the North East in the use of the RTI, as per their blog post.

The Convention will explore how the various people’s movements/campaigns across the country have used RTI to expose the truth and help develop an informed citizenry for democratic decision making.

I am defending sovereignty of Manipur : UNLF Chairman

Arrested Chairman of UNLF (United National Liberation Front), R K Meghen alias Sana Yaima has submitted through his counsel Moirangthem Gunadhor that he has not waged any war against India, but just trying to defend his country ( Manipur) sovereignty while he was produced before a Special Court of National Investigation Agency (NIA) at Guwahati on 16 Dec 2010.

Meghen further submitted that, India kept then Maharaja of Manipur Budhachandra under house arrest in 1949 in Shillong and forcefully got the merger agreement signed.

North East India connection with Presidency of Barack Obama

Shomik Dutta, who is accompanying Barack Obama, president of United States of America, is one of the youngest and among the nine Indian-origin people in the White House and he has North East India connection through his father, Ronojoy Dutta, who was born and brought up in Shilling, Meghalaya.

Ronojoy Dutta was born at Banashree, Nongthymmai in Shillong. Ronojoy passed his school from St Edmund’s School, Shillong in the 1965 batch. He was the president of United Airlines— the largest airlines in the world.

Shillong Chamber Choir will perform for Barak Obama

Shillong Chamber Choir, which made North East India proud by winning ‘India’s Got Talent – Khoj 2′ on Colors TV earlier this month, has been invited by the Government of India through the Ministry of External Affairs to perform before visiting US president Barak Obama.

“We have been invited by the Government of India through the Ministry of External Affairs. The invitation came much before we won the reality show,” said Damon Lyndem, bass singer and media coordinator for the choir.

Manipur Merger Agreement : 15 Oct 1949

For many years now, 15 October has been observed as black day by under ground and outlawed organisations in Manipur, a North Eastern state. It was on 15th October 1949 when Maharaja BODHA CHANDRA SINGH ceded “full and exclusive authority, jurisdiction and powers for and in relation to the governance of the State” to Dominion Government of India through the Manipur Merger Agreement, signed on 21st September 1949.
