NESO takes out massive rally demanding expulsion of illegal immigrants

Yesterday, MESO ( North East Students Organisation) staged a massive rally at Latashil field in Guwahati. It was supported by many organisations and participated by all walks of life.

This protest was organised by AASU ( All Assam Student Union) which spearheaded 6 year agitation for expulsion of illegal immigrants from 1979 to 1985 which resulted in birth of AGP ( Assam Gana Parishad) which captured power after election was held.

NESO secretary general Gumjum Haider, said, “The movement is not against Muslims, Hindus or any other community. It is against the illegal migrants staying in the North-east.”

Government Jobs in north eastern states of India

One of the main aims of the Government of India is to work for welfare of people. The Government helps to reduce the inequalities between the rich and the poor by providing government jobs to all. Maps of eastern states of India North Eastern States of India are Sikkim and the seven sister states if India.

How North East India loses being far away from New Delhi

One of the often heard comment about North East India is that it is being ignored by center, ( read New Delhi) due to its distance ( approximately 2000KM) from it. One may wonder how is that possible in this jet age and internet age where news of an earthquake in east coast of United States of America trends in India minutes after in Twitter!

And does that mean that had Calcutta ( Kolkata now a days) remained capital of India like before 1911, would North East India have got attention as much as Kashmir gets now a days ?

India dividing Manipur : RK Meghen, UNLF Chairman

Arrested and jailed UNLF Chairman RK Sanayaima has accused India of adopting divisive policy deliberately treating the different communities on different scales to breed hatred and animosity among the indigenous peoples of Manipur.
He was speaking to media persons at the Court complex of NIA Special Judge at Guwahati on 25th Augst 2011 when he was produced. “It’s time to work and make Manipur self-reliant instead of harping that NH 39 and NH 53 are our life lines”, Sanayaima asserted.

It may be mentioned that it is almost 25 days, Manipurs lifeline NH 53 is blocked by various demands.
Even though it is 64/65 years since Manipur was allegedly annexed to India, there is no sign of development in Manipur till date, Sanayaima added.

Admission in Delhi for North East Students

A co-ordination committee meeting was held yesterday in New Delhi between resident commissioners of North Eastern states and Delhi University authorities in order to discuss admission procedure for new admission procedures for various courses during academic session 2011-2012.

Prof. Suman Verma, Joint Dean, Students Welfare and Examinations informed that a Teachers Counsellors and Senior Students Help Desk will assist the aspiring students during registration and admission at all the four centres. Prof. Verma sought cooperation from the Resident Commissioners of concerned states. The rules and regulations and other important issues relating to admission procedures for the students of North Eastern States seeking admission in Delhi University were discussed in the meeting.

7 Policemen killed in deadly ambush by suspected NSCN-IM in Manipur

Seven policemen were killed and six others were injured when suspected NSCN-IM militants ambushed returning convoy of Phungyar MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing at the top of a hill about half a kilometre away from Riha village, 16 kms on the south of Litan PS of Ukhrul in Manipur.

The MLA received minor injuries in the ambush that was laid by the insurgents at a place not far away from Riha village where he had attended a convention on HIV/AIDS.

Today is Goru Bihu in Assam

Today is Goru Bihu as well as last day of year in Assam as per Assamese calendar. On this day, the cattle are washed, smeared with ground turmeric and other pastes in the morning at river or pond nearby village.

They are also struck with sprigs of “dighalati” and “makhiyati” ( special tree found in Assam and North East India) and endeared to be healthy and productive (“lao kha, bengena kha, bosore bosore barhi ja/maar xoru, baper xoru, toi hobi bor bor goru – in Assamese”—eat gourd, eat brinjal, grow from year to year/your mother is small, your father is small, but you be a large one).

Irom Sharmila : Towards 10 years of hunger strike

On 2 November 2010, Ms. Irom Sharmila Chanu, ( Known as Iron Lady of Manipur), will complete ten years of hunger strike demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA). An extraordinary struggle of an extraordinary woman!

Irom Chanu Sharmila began her protest after the Malom massacre where 10 civilians were gunned down by the Indian security Forces on 2 November 2000. She has been on hunger strike since then! But, Indian Government has not taken steps to repeal AFSPA so far.
