Maoists Armed group in Assam and Mising Tribe

In recent reports indicate that Maoists groups have setup an armed group in upper Assam. In another alarming news report says that LDCM (Liberal Democratic Council of Misingland ) has threatened to attack NHPC dam at Gerukamukh, Dheamji.

While it is a known strategy for Maoists to establish a root in poor and downtrodden areas before starting an armed rebellion, with a Mising armed group in the name of LDCM, other wise peaceful second largest tribe in Assam, should be viewed together.

Separate State demands in North East India : an analysis

There have been news about demand for separate states by many small or big tribes in North East India. While many tribes have their own autonomous councils which control many social welfare departments except police, judiciary, personals, PSUs and other central government departments.

Still, there are reports of ‘Bandhs’, agitation for demanding separate states. It may be mentioned quickly here that, apart from Manipur, almost all other states were once district of Assam! But one by one, many states were created carving out areas from Assam. Recently, separate state demand by Bodos are making headlines.

Today is Ali Ai Ligang Festival for Misings in Assam

Today, the first Wednesday of Giinmur Polo ( February – March) of the year is the Ali Ai ligang festival for Mising tribe in Assam. Mising is part of greater Tani tribes which are majorly found districts in upper Assam, Arunachal Pradesh. Tani Tribes are found in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tibet ( China).

Mising is one of the most colourful tribes in North East India. They have migrated to plains of Assam from hills of Arunachal Pradesh and started living on river banks. They have been able to preserve their language, culture while living in harmony with other Assamese speaking people in Assam.

Opposition of Bodoland one of the main demands : ULFA

Ending month-long speculation about demands to be raised by ULFA (United Liberation Front Of Asom) during its much hyped talks with Indian government, ULFA has come out with few demands like special status for Assam. Another important and significant demand by ULFA is opposing the separate Bodoland Demand by ABSU ( All Bodo Student Union).

Sashadhar Chowdhury, the outfit’s ‘foreign secretary’, in an interview to CNN-IBN news channel, said the group’s ‘basic demand will be to overhaul the constitution because that is the sovereign instrument with which a country is governed’.

Arunachal Pradesh Integral Part of India : Indian PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that Arunachal Pradesh has always been an integral part of India and will remain so and the Chinese map showing the northeastern state as its part will not change the reality.

This “simple fact” was conveyed by the Prime Minister to a delegation of All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union which met him here yesterday, AAPSU president Takam Tatung said. “Arunachal Pradesh has always been an integral part of India and will remain so,” Tatung quoted Singh as saying.

BJP demands Subansiri Dam construction at Gerukamukh

On 17th Nov 2010, BJP ( Bharatiya Janata Party) staged a massive protest gathering at Gerukamukh demanding a immediate halt to the ongoing construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project ( LSHELP) at Gerukamukh, Guagamukh in Dhemaji District of Assam.

Former BJP president Rajnath Singh attended the meeting which was organised by Assam BJP state unit. More than seven thousand people coming from different parts of Dhemaji Dhakuakhana, Silapathar etc. participated in the meeting.

Politics of Big dams in North East India hots up

Looks like, the politics of big dams in North East India is hotting up with many stakeholders throwing in their hats. While various environmentalist groups, ethnic groups likely to be most affected by these dams, Mising community (second largest tribe in Assam, a natural riverside inhabitants ), KMSS led by Akhil Gogoi, AASU, etc. are already in the ring, recently, the ruling party Congress has also thrown in their hat by announcing that they would like Assam winter Assembly session from November 8 so that the House could take a decision on the crucial issue.

So, finally Government of Assam has woken up to popular public resentment against big dams in Arunachal Pradesh , except a goof up that, the same had already been discussed already in 2009! [Read more...]
