KMSS supports North East Water Resource Authority (NEWRA)

What could be music to the ears of CM Tarun Gogoi of Assam, KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) has extended support to it for forming North East Water Resource Authority (NEWRA). KMSS has also insisted on effecting an amendment in the National Hydro Power Policy 2008.

In a statement issued to the press, the KMSS said that unless it was ensured that Assam enjoyed equal benefits of inter-State river waters, all construction of dams over inter-State rivers should be opposed.

Gerukamukh Dam And KMSS, Akhil Gogoi etc.

As the completion of NHPC’s 2000MW hydel power project nearing completion at Gerukamukh, Assam-Arunachal Border, the agitation led by KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) too seems to be peaking. Recently, KMSS has threatened economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal( West) MP Takam Sanjay of Congress has retorted by demanding to ban KMSS on national interest!

Recently, many vehicles carrying equipments to project site at Gerukamukh have been stranded on NH52 at various places due to blockade created by KMSS and its supporting organisations. Among its supporting organisations, TMPK ( Takam Mising Porin Kebang or All Mising Student Union) has large population living on the banks of river Subansiri for centuries!

Megadam protest in Assam gaining momentum

After the news of turbine being ferried to Gerukamukh by Brahmaputra and Subansiri river spread in Assam, protests against mega dams has been gaining momentum again. This time, both powerful student organisation AASU ( All Assam Student Union) and KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Somiti) have taken initiatives and organising picketing at various places in Assam.

Many experts opine that the LSHELP ( Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project ) Run-of-the-river (ROR) hydroelectricity generation project which does not build a large dam or large reservoir. So it does neither affect environment much nor can flood downstream.

Bulk SMS banned in Assam

The Assam government has banned bulk SMS system in the state, with an aim to prevent the facility becoming a platform for instigating public in context to any political or social happening. The administration has directed the service providers to enforce this ban.

Recently, it has been experienced that cell phones have been turning a tool to pitch one’s voice and popularize a thought. Mobile service providers in the state have been asked to ban bulk SMS system. After the circulation of the order all leading mobile companies dispatched emails to their offices across Assam.

KMSS LEADER AKHIL GOGOI ARRESTED

The sole strong peasant organization of Assam,Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity(KMMS) General Secretary Akhil Gogoi was arrested today from his residence at Nijarapar ,Guwahati for his involvement with the Wednesday’ violence. He was taken to the Panbajar Police station amid tight security. Gogoi was picked up from the premises of the Guwahati press club where he has organized a press conference.

On Wednesday three people including a 9 year old child were dead at Dispur Last gate in alleged indiscriminate firing of police. Gogoi,who has been raising voice against corruption and construction of mega dams at upper parts of the mighty Brahamputra and its tributaries may be locked under National security Act.

Anna Hazare pledges support of Repeal of AFSPA

Anna Hazare, a Gandhian, who recently shot to fame and media limelight due to hunger strike in support of Lokpal bill implementation in New Delhi, took part in a anti-corruption rally in Guwahati AEI ground and pledges support for repeal of AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Power Act 1958), a much infamous draconian law, initially enacted to fight Naga insurgency in North East and now extended to Jammu and Kashmir.

Asked to express his opinion on the ‘draconian’ Act by peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi at the ‘Rally Against Corruption’ organised by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity, the noted Gandhian said that he would press for the repeal of the Act.

Candlelit March in Assam in support of Anna Hazare

A candlelit march was organised in Guwahati in support of Anna Hazare’s fast unto death demanding the enactment of Jan Lokpal Bill to tackle corruption. Ann Hazare als demands that 50 per cent representatives from civil society to be included in the joint committee that will draft the bill.

The LokPal bill, which is supposed to create an ombudsmen which will be able to prosecute politicians, bureaucrats against corruption charges, has not been enacted for last 42 years.

ULFA is trying to bomb Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project

ULFA is planning to plant bomb and try to sabotage Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project ( LSHELP) at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji district of Assam, according to intelligence sources.

Dhemaji superintendent of police P Kar said that a joint team of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland police and army personnel was jointly patrolling the area which is bordered by the two neighbouring states.
