Flood in Assam: Jonai and parts of Arunachal Pradesh still cut off

Recently, GaiNadi again breached both railway track and NH-52 in Dhemaji district of Assam. Though after cessation of rain, the flood situation has improved a bit, but both Jonai subdivision, the most backward area in Assam, as well as large area of Arunachal Pradesh like Pasighat etc. are still cut off from rest of the country and the world!

The authority yesterday restored the disrupted portion at Samarajan but it is yet to restore the breached NH-52 at Gai nadi in Dhemaji district.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s Foreign Visit

As usual Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, once again mocks people’ plight. The state chief minister Tarun Gogoi has taken another foreign visit at a time when flood situation in the state deteriorates rendering thousands of people homeless.

The chief minister has taken this visit arguing that the motif of his visit to observe the education system of the developed countries. Accordingly he left Guwahati today. He will leave Delhi tomorrow at 6-40 A.M. for London.After that he will visit Switzerland and France.

Centre promises direct Delhi – Lilabari Air Service

Union Minister for Civil Aviation Valayar Ravi has promised to introduce direct flight from New Delhi to Lilabari for the convenience of people of Arunachal Pradesh. Lilabari is a small airport located at Lakhimpur town, one of the oldest town in north bank of Brahmaputra in upper Assam.

The minister gave the assurance while responding to a memorandum submitted to him by Arunachal Pradesh Minister for PWD and UD Nabam Tuki here today. He also assured to look into the request for converting the Naharlagun Heliport to short take-off and landing (STOL) airport, according to a communique.

Pasighat – oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh

Pasighat is oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh which was established in 1911 after Britishers defeated Adi tribes in Anglo-Abor war. APO ( Assistant Political Officer was then appointed to look after the area including present day Jonai subdivision of Assam up to McMohan lines established in 1914. 100 years of its existence was celebrated in February this year.

Pasighat is picturesque town with around 25 thousand population on the bank of mighty Siang river. Sinag river takes name Lali while entering Assam and then becomes Brahmaputra, the only male river in India.

Assam Election 2011 Updates for last week – 2

Bogibeel Railway Bridge : What is the Story

Bogibeel Railway Bridge is a proposed bridge which would connect Dhemaji District with Dibrugarh city. This bridge will connect not only people from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts of Assam, but also from people of Pasighat, Alang and Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh.

This bridge was first inaugurated by none other than Prime Minister of India H.D. Deve Gowda in 1997. Interestingly, another Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the construction on April 21, 2002, and declared that the bridge would be completed within 2007. It was even declared as a “national project” ( whatever that means) in 2007.

Gana Shakti : A force to reckon in Mising dominated areas in Assam

With formalising the seat sharing arrangement with AGP ( Asm Gana Parishad), Gana Shakti , a small regional party in Assam visible in few upper Assam districts where Mising has population, has come out as a force to reckon. Presently, it has one MLA, Bhuban Pegu who was elected from Jonai reserved constituency in 2006 defeating Pradan Barua of Congress.

IN the seat sharing arrangement, AGP will support Gana Shakti in two constituencies Jonai and Majuli while Gana Shakti will support AGP in other 20 seats in Upper Assam districts mainly in Dhakuakhana, Dhemaji.

How AGP can win coming Assam Assembly Election ?

AGP ( Asom Gana Parishad an emotionally charged party created after 1985 AASU Accord ) is routinely written off recently by all types of media as well as intellectuals in Assam while maintaining that Congress is certain to come back to power again for the third time in a row.

While, AGP is not favourably high lighted in recent media, the hard facts of the results from 2006 points a slide of vote share by Congress from 2001 assembly election by 7.05 percentage points while AGP has increased its vote share by 0.37 percentage points, despite the fact that Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, two time chief minister left AGP to form AGP(P) who got vote share of 2.51 %.
