NRC Update row in Assam continues

AMSU (All Assam Minorities Students Union) along with 24 other minority organisations have strongly objected the state cabinet sub-committee’s decision to re-launch the registrar general of citizen registration’s pilot project to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of 1951.

The joint meeting convened by minorities student’ body AAMSU, which involved All Assam Madrassa Students’ Association, BTC Minorities Students Union Citizens’ Right Preservation Committee, Social Justice Peace Forum, Raghibi faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind amongst others.

Gerukamukh Dam And KMSS, Akhil Gogoi etc.

As the completion of NHPC’s 2000MW hydel power project nearing completion at Gerukamukh, Assam-Arunachal Border, the agitation led by KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) too seems to be peaking. Recently, KMSS has threatened economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal( West) MP Takam Sanjay of Congress has retorted by demanding to ban KMSS on national interest!

Recently, many vehicles carrying equipments to project site at Gerukamukh have been stranded on NH52 at various places due to blockade created by KMSS and its supporting organisations. Among its supporting organisations, TMPK ( Takam Mising Porin Kebang or All Mising Student Union) has large population living on the banks of river Subansiri for centuries!

Himanta Biswa Sarma takes charge as education minister of Assam

Himanta Biswa Sarma, after winning last assembly election from his constituency with huge margin of over 77000 votes, took charge as education minister of Assam while retaining health portfolio. He has also been given Assam accord implementation portfolio.

Within days of taking charge as education minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma had visited education directorate offices in Kahilipara like Higher education, elementary education etc. The video is embedded :-

Rs. 2 Crore for ULFA Peace Talk and Assam Election

Recent news report in various news papers tells the story that, ULFA has been given Rs. 2 crore ( as per Asian Age Rs. 40 lac as per Assam Tribune) for daily expenses of ULFA leaders as well as its 400 overground cadres who are now in designated camps at various places in Assam.

According to Asian Age, the pro-talk group of ULFA led by Arabinda Rajkhowa ( currently released on bail from Guwahati jail after he was arrested from Bangladesh and pushed back to India) sought the financial assistance from Government.

Assam Assembly Election update week – 6

This is the second last update on Assam Assembly Election 2011. The final update will after 13th May 2011 when the votes would be counted and result would be declared. Since EVM ( Electronic Voting Machine) is being used, we can expect all the result by afternoon itself.

The campaign for second and final phase of voting for 64 seats in lower Assam had come to an end yesterday on 9th April 2011. An electorate of more than 96lacs would decide 64 MLAs among 596 candidates on 11 April 2011.

Assam Assembly Election update week – 5

This week has been quite eventful one with all top national leaders from almost all parties participating in the Assam Assembly Election 2011 visited Assam and campaigned for their respective candidates. The top leaders included PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani etc.

Apart from the usual campaigning, there were also couple of clashes reported between party workers at different places injuring several people. There are also few reports of firing at houses of party leaders.

This week has completed the nomination process of Assam Assembly election 2011 where more than 500 candidates contesting in 64 seats have filed their nominations. Many high profile leaders, dissident leaders, party deserters had filed nominations with fan fare in their respective constituencies.

BJP Demands EC to ban NewsLive TV Channel

According to Sentinel News paper in Assam, BJP ( Bharatiya Janata Party) has moved to Election Commission of India to ban NewsLive TV ( a small satellite channel, more famous as channel owned by powerful and controversial Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife ).

According to BJP’s national vice-president Mukthar Abbas Naqvi, News Live “is presently running as an agent of the Congress Party and screening programmes of the Congress and openly canvassing for them, which is nothing but a clear case of malpractice of paid news”.
