Maoists-Police Encounter in Assam

Which seems to be first of its kind, a confirmed encounter between Assam Police and Maoists insurgents had taken place today in which four Maoists have been reportedly killed while one Police person was also injured seriously.
Though, not much details is unknown, the encounter took place at Deopani Borgara in Sadia in Upper Assam bordering Arunachal PRadesh. Large quanitites of arms and ammunition is also recovered.

There have been many reports about Maoists establishing its Revolutionary People’s Guerrilla Army in Assam to fight the government.

Candlelit March in Assam in support of Anna Hazare

A candlelit march was organised in Guwahati in support of Anna Hazare’s fast unto death demanding the enactment of Jan Lokpal Bill to tackle corruption. Ann Hazare als demands that 50 per cent representatives from civil society to be included in the joint committee that will draft the bill.

The LokPal bill, which is supposed to create an ombudsmen which will be able to prosecute politicians, bureaucrats against corruption charges, has not been enacted for last 42 years.

North East India joins celebration of India’s ICC World Cup victory

Cities and towns in Assam and North East India witnessed unprecedented celebration after India won ICC World Cup 2011 defeating Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This is India’s second victory of the cup after 28 years when it last won in 1983 at Lords, London.

As soon as Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit a huge six to surpass Sri Lanka total of 274, fans came out to street and started dancing and congratulating each other, known or unknown in all cities and towns in North East India. The frenzied celebration continued till late night.

Bogibeel Railway Bridge : What is the Story

Bogibeel Railway Bridge is a proposed bridge which would connect Dhemaji District with Dibrugarh city. This bridge will connect not only people from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts of Assam, but also from people of Pasighat, Alang and Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh.

This bridge was first inaugurated by none other than Prime Minister of India H.D. Deve Gowda in 1997. Interestingly, another Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the construction on April 21, 2002, and declared that the bridge would be completed within 2007. It was even declared as a “national project” ( whatever that means) in 2007.

ATASU presses demand for ST status to Tai Ahoms in Assam

The student organsation of Tai Ahom community in Assam ATASU (All Tai Ahom Students Union) members on 4th March 2011 staged a sit in New Delhi seeking inclusion of the community in the Scheduled Tribe category as per the Article 342 of the Indian Constitution.
Atasu general secretary Moyur Borgohain said, “The ST status is a long-pending demand of the Tai Ahom community. They should be categorized as ST and incorporated in the list of ST (Plains).”

Threat to regionalism in Assam : Sarbananda Sonowal quits AGP to join BJP

Sarbananda Sonowal, AASU leader turned MP from AGP who had wrested Dibrugarh parliamentary seat from Congress in 2004 general election has resigned from primary membership of AGP ( Asom Gana Parishad) on Friday, 4th February 2011.

Sarbananda Sonowal had ended Congress domination in Dibrugarh constituency which had been electing Congress candidate since independence of India. Sarbananda Sonowal was president of All Assam Students Union ( AASU) the powerful student organisation in Assam from 1992 to 999. He was also chairman of NESO (North East Students Organisation) from 1994 to 2004.

Today is Me-Dam-Me-Fi : Festival of Ahoms in Assam

Me Dam Me Fi, the annual religious festival of the Ahoms in Assam where they offer ‘puja’ to their ancestors and observed on 31st January every year.

In Tai language, Me-Dam-Me-Fi means offer of Puja and prayer in memory of their forefathers. Me means paying tributes, Dam means forefathers and Fi means gods and goddesses. In short, Me-Dam-Me-Fi signifies offer of prayer or tribute in honour of the souls of their forefathers. The Tai Ahoms celebrate this festival with great jubilation and enthusiasm on January 31 every year and this day is declared as a State holiday. Although with the passage of time, it has witnessed some change in the modus operandi of performing Puja, the basic features remain more or less same.

AGP Tenders public apology

AGP ( Assam Gana Parishad), the main opposition party of Assam, tendered public apology for doing ‘major mistakes’ during their rule in Assam from 1985-1989 and 1996-2001. The apology was made by AGP President Chandra Mohan Patowary in a rally at Sadia, Assam. This rally was part of AGP’s month long ‘mass-contact’ program.
