Indian PM recent visit to Myanmar and Insurgents in North East

After 25 years, an Indian PM visited Myanmar when Dr. Manmohan Singh visited its eastern neighbour Myanmar on 27 May 2012. During the visit, he even met Aung San Suu Kyi, opposition leader, and Nobel Peace Prize winner who had spent years in house arrest as she led pro-democracy agitation for decades.

With recent, opening up of Myanmar to the democratic world after facing sanction from western countries led by USA, this visit by an Indian PM is significant and timely. As expected, Indian PM could get assurance from Myanmar government a promise which says, Myanmar will not allow North Eastern insurgents group to establish and operate training camp in Myanmar.

NSCN(IM) – Assam Rifles stand -off continues

Four days ago, NSCN (IM) had detained four Assam Rifles jawans and snatched their weapons. NSCN (IM) claims that these Assam Rifles Jawans were traveling in a truck and trying to tresspass their Hebron Camp area violating the ceasefire ground rules, so NSCN (IM) were forced to detain them.

Assam Rifles also retaliated by putting up ‘checking point’ in all the approach roads to Hebron Camp, off Dimapur and conducted intense frisking. They also detained four high ranking NSCN (IM) leaders for whole day who were going to Hebron camp for meeting. They were released in the evening.

Plebiscite Demand gaining Momentum in Manipur

With arrested UNLF ( United National Liberation Front) chief refusing to negotiate with Indian Government and renewing his demand for plebiscite in Manipur, plebiscite demand is gaining momentum in Manipur, as per reports published in local News Paper The Sanghai Express.

A public meeting was held at Pukhao Laipham Imphal East which was organised by Awang Lam Pukhao UMO Unit on the theme “People’s Participation in Resolving The Indo-Manipur conflict.”

Irom Sharmila released

Irom Sharmila, Iron Lady of Manipur, who has been on hunger strike for more than ten years now, has been released by the chief judicial magistrate of Imphal, Manipur. And she walked out of the security ward of the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) here where she was being forced-fed through the nose by the government forces.

Incidentally, her release coincide with visit of the President of India Mrs. Pratibha Patil to Manipur who has arrived here on official two day visit.

UNLF cautions collaborators with Indian Security Forces

The banned militant organisation of Manipur UNLF (United National Liberation Front) has cautioned all the people collaborating with the Indian security forces. UNLF is one of the largest militant group active in Manipur, a North East Indian state.

A statement issued by the outfit’s senior publicity officer Ksh Yoiheiba, appreciated activities of WIGC (Women’s Income Generation Centre) aimed at promoting crafts of the land but opposed to invitation of top officials of Assam Rifles to the inaugural function of a ‘Craft Bazar’ at Thoubal recently.

NDFB Deputy Commander Arrested from Aizawl

B Jwangkhang alias George Boro Deputy Commander of outlawed NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland), has been arrested in Aizawl, Mizoram from a hotel after he has sneaked back to India from his hideout in Bangladesh, according to Assam Rifles official as per reports.

George Boro is one of the key accused in 30 October 2010 bomb blast in 2008 where more than 88 people were killed, in one co-ordinated serial bomb blast attack in Assam. He is said have carried out the blast after instruction from Ranjan Daimari, chief of outlawed NDFB.

10 years of hunger strike

Irom Chanu Sharmila, the Iron Lady From Manipur, North East India is completing 10 years of her hunger strike in demanding repeal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, (AFSPA) which has been widely condemned all over the world as a draconian law. Incidently, India which boasts itself as the largest democracy in the world, has been using this law for last 60 years to quell unrest in some selected parts of its territory.

Irom Chanu Sharmila started her fast on November 2, 2000, after 10 civilians including a middle-aged woman were killed in an “encounter” in the heart of Imphal by 8 Assam Rifles.

AFSPA is required, says Indian General

According to outgoing Lt. General Yadava, Assam Rifles Chief, says that AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Power Act, 1958) is very much required for battling insurgency in North East India. While another top India Police Officer, now Governor of Meghalaya R S Mooshahari disagrees.

Indian Security Forces, armed with AFSPA, is still battling for last 50 years, but insurgency is almost as severe as it was some 50 years back, most probably, AFSPA has not been quite useful in battling insurgency in North East India.
