Assam Assembly Election update week – 5

This week has been quite eventful one with all top national leaders from almost all parties participating in the Assam Assembly Election 2011 visited Assam and campaigned for their respective candidates. The top leaders included PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani etc.

Apart from the usual campaigning, there were also couple of clashes reported between party workers at different places injuring several people. There are also few reports of firing at houses of party leaders.

Assam Election 2011 Updates for last week – 4

This week has completed the nomination process of Assam Assembly election 2011 where more than 500 candidates contesting in 64 seats have filed their nominations. Many high profile leaders, dissident leaders, party deserters had filed nominations with fan fare in their respective constituencies.

Few highlights include nomination filing by Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rockybul Hussain of Congress, Chandra Mohan Patowari, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of AGP, Pradyut Bora of BJP among others. Here are few interesting Assam Election related incidents for last week :-

Akhil Gogoi against voting for Congress

Finally, as on expected like, Akhil ‘Andolan’ Gogoi has joined Assam Assembly Election 2011 by urging voters not to vote for Congress! He alleges that Congress has not been able to anything to root out corruption in the state, so no vote for Congress.

Incidentally, he has not appealed to vote any particular party! The firebrand KMSS ( Krishak Mukit Sangram Samiti) has also added that many ministers in Tarun Gogoi cabinet are involved in corruption.

Assam Election 2011 Updates for last week – 2

Continuing with Assam Election 2011 update from last Sunday, here is the interesting updates again for last week. With Congress declaring its list of candidates for 118 seats in Assam, the contest pattern has almost emerged now.

Assam Election 2011 schedule announced

As expected, the schedule of Assam election 2011 has been announced today by Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi that Assam Election would be held in two phases. The first phase would take place on 4th April 2011 while the other phase will be held on 11 April 2011.

So, as demanded by various parties in Assam, the Assembly election of Assam will be held just before Bohag Bihu in Assam. Bohag Bihu is main festival in Assam which normally starts from 14th April in a year.

More children dying in Congress Ruled Assam

The latest data released by the Registrar-General of India (RGI) in its Sample Registration System for the calendar year of 2009 shows that Assam is amongst worst performing states in the filed of Infant Mortality Rate ( IMR ) with 61 deaths per 1000 birth! Incidentally, the number has increased from its previous year.

Nationally, the IMR has reduced to 50, while Assam’s IMR stands at 61. It may be mentioned that, the Health department is portfolio of flamboyant Congress Leader Himanta Biswa Sarma who has been advertising his success as health minister in Assam. Bu this increase in IMR can be termed as his major failure as a health minister resulting in increased deaths of infants in Assam.

New Year 2011 wish from North East India Blog

We wish everyone a very Happy New Year 2011 and hope this year brings peace, harmony and development to North East India.

The last few days have been quite eventful and it may even become turning point of events to unfold in next new months in Assam with repercussions in other states of North East India too! Release of Arabinda Rajkhowa and news of imminent handing of Anup Chetia from Bangladesh are quite significant development!

With release of Arabinda Rajkhowa and the opinions by various people, netizens, intellectuals as well as media people are quite interesting and are dominating everywhere!
