Bangladesh is no longer safe heaven for NE millitants

Indian security agencies are apprehensive of North East insurgent groups trying to re-establish after general election in Bangladsh next year if not-so-friendly government comes to power. Bangladesh can be credited with India’s successful split of ULFA, one of the most powerful and famous insurgent group in North East India.

Bangladesh authorities had ‘pushed back’ ULFA chairman Arabind Rajkhowa along with many others through its border posts to India who were promptly arrested by Indian authorities. Apart from many ULFA cadres, leaders from Manipur insurgents too were similarly pushed back to India as India and Bangladesh does not have an extradition treaty. These arrangements worked as Bangladesh elected pro-India party Awami League in 2008.

Preliminary talks held between ULFA and Government: Peace in Assam ?

Preliminary talks held between pro-talk ULFA ( United Liberation Front of Asom) leaders and representative of Government of India and Government of Assam was held yesterday which lasted 90 minutes at North Block, New Delhi on Wednesday, 25th October 2011.

As per report, Pro-Talk ULFA was represented by ‘chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa, Foreign Secretary Shashadhar Choudhuri while Government of India was represented by union home secretary R.K. Singh and Jishnu Barua led government of Assam along with other top home ministry officials.

Ceasefire Agreement with ULFA likely now

A formal ceasefire agreement may soon take place between pro-Talk group of ULFA, led by its founder president Arabinda Rajkhowa, after it is reported that pro-talk ULFA group has been invited to Delhi for discussion on 3rd September 2011. It may be mentioned here that, pro-Talk ULFA group had declared ceasefire unilaterally on 13 July 2011.

It is expected that, the rules of ceasefire would be same in line with present NDFB and other rebel groups in North East India, which are in ceasefire agreement and talks with government of India.

Pro-Talk ULFA leaders will get into business : Peace Talk result ?

What can be called a very interesting development, Pro-talk ULFA leader Mrinal Hazarika stated that ULFA would now involve itself with business activities in Assam. Hira Saraniya, the ‘commander of the outfit’s 709 battalion’ has been appointed as the in-charge for the purpose, he further added.

Claiming that the intervention is aimed at evicting ‘mafia raj’ and ‘syndicates’ from the existing business scenario, the ULFA leader said that the outfit’s intervention would facilitate involvement of local youths in coal and other lucrative businesses.

Pro-talk ULFA denies having received money

ULFA had denied having received any money from Government for their day to day expenses. In a press release sent to news channels, news papers in Assam, pro-talk ULFA group chairman, Arabinda Rajkhowa had clarified that they have not received any money from government and urges news papers to prove that pro-talk ULFA had received any money.

In the press release, he had also warned media not to spread such rumour and appealed to the people of Assam to not get miss-leaded by such biased news. [Read more...]

Rs. 2 Crore for ULFA Peace Talk and Assam Election

Recent news report in various news papers tells the story that, ULFA has been given Rs. 2 crore ( as per Asian Age Rs. 40 lac as per Assam Tribune) for daily expenses of ULFA leaders as well as its 400 overground cadres who are now in designated camps at various places in Assam.

According to Asian Age, the pro-talk group of ULFA led by Arabinda Rajkhowa ( currently released on bail from Guwahati jail after he was arrested from Bangladesh and pushed back to India) sought the financial assistance from Government.

Pro-Talk ULFA condemns Bomb Blast at Rajiv Bhavan, Guwahati

Pro-Talk ULFA faction led by its founding president, Arabinda Rajkhowa had condemned the bomb attack on Rajiv Bhavan, Congress Head Quarter, in Guwahati on Monday, evening 14 Mar 2011 injuring five person, one seriously.

In a press release, pro-talk ULFA leaders had termed the bomb attack “unconstitutional” and committed by Paresh Barua on his own. They also threatened Paresh Barua of organisational action for taking such steps on his own.

ULFA threatens Congress in Assam

In a surprising development, it is reported that ULFA’s anti-talk faction led by self styled Commander In Chief Paresh Barua had threatened Congress to launch armed strike against it. According to Times Of India, ULFA mailed them warning people to stay away from Congress meetings ahead of Assam assembly election due in April 2011.

ULFA had accused Congress of trying to weaken ULFA by splitting it. ULFA will attack Congress with arms and they are requesting people not to attend their meetings as they do not want to harm.
