Amir Khan supports repeal of AFSPA : JPF Press Release

New Delhi, Ramlilla Ground, August 28, 2011 : Bollywood Actor Amir khan says “Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 should be repealed. I Support Irom Sharmila! I don’t think there is any provision in the Indian constitution to deny meeting with people in custody.”

The coordinator of Just Peace Foundation, Seram Rojesh in Delhi briefed Bollywood actor Armir Khan at Ramleela ground, New Delhi about the condition of Irom Sharmila who has been fasting in the last 10 years on 27/8/2011. She would be completed her fast for 11 years fast on coming 4 November, 2011. She is not allowed to meet people freely including her family members by imposing many procedures by the government. It takes many months to get clearance from government even to meet her.

Flood in Assam and Big Dams in North East India

Recent report says that at least 3.3lacs people in Assam’s flood prone districts Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and other districts Jorhat, Barpeta have been displaced or rendered homeless by flood. These floods were mainly caused by incessant rains in Arunachal Pradesh hills as well as in the plains of Assam.

But it is not only rain which causes flood in Lakhimpur District. Assam and whole of North East India rains well for centuries now and Cherapunji in Meghalaya boasts of the wettest place one earth. With this kind of free information available, Ranganadi dam was constructed to produce 405MW of power over Ranga nadi river Arunachal Pradesh known as Dikrong river in Lakhimpur district of Assam.

Indian Government finally woke up to plebiscite call in Manipur

Finally, when call for plebiscite in Manipur gained enough momentum as well as widespread support, which many opine an option to end insurgency in Manpur, government of India seems to have woken up and demanded action t be taken against such demands.

It may be noted that, recently, many mainstream political leaders joined activists, social organisation supporting the demand for a plebiscite to decide future of Manipur with India. Even Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh had opined that plebiscite is good beginning for ending insurgency in Manipur.

Binayak Sen demands repeal of AFSPA

Binayak Sen, the controversial doctor cum civil rights activist has demanded repeal of Armed Forces Special Power Act – 1958 ( AFSPA) “A large number of human rights organizations have joined hands to oppose the sedition law and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA),” Sen said at a felicitation function in Kalyani in West Bengal.

Binayak Sen was granted bail on 15 April 2011 by the Supreme Court after being sentenced to life imprisonment by Chhattisgarh court on charges of sedition and alleged links with Maoists in central India.

Anna Hazare pledges support of Repeal of AFSPA

Anna Hazare, a Gandhian, who recently shot to fame and media limelight due to hunger strike in support of Lokpal bill implementation in New Delhi, took part in a anti-corruption rally in Guwahati AEI ground and pledges support for repeal of AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Power Act 1958), a much infamous draconian law, initially enacted to fight Naga insurgency in North East and now extended to Jammu and Kashmir.

Asked to express his opinion on the ‘draconian’ Act by peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi at the ‘Rally Against Corruption’ organised by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity, the noted Gandhian said that he would press for the repeal of the Act.

Call for Nationwide Protest against AFSPA

People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) has called for nation wide protest against AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958) from 22 May 2011 the day the Indian Parliament promulgated the ordinance in 1958 upto August 18, the day the Indian Parliament passed Act in 1958.

General Secretary, Pushkar Raj of PUCL had also demanded freeing Irom Sharmila, the Iron Lady of Manipur, who has been on hunger strike for more than 10 years demanding repealing of AFSPA.
