All North Eastern states except Tripura are unlikely to get Aadhar Cards ( An identity card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India or UIDAI). It was decided after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Unique Identification Authority of India related issues (CC-UIDAI) chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, held on 27 Jan 2012 in New Delhi.
Briefing newsmen, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and deputy chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia said that in all cases the NPR data base would prevail. However, Aadhaar numbers would prevail in those States where it has been issued. And in rest of the States, the NPR exercise would continue.
It is learnt that, the security concern and fear of falling these cards into the hands of illegal immigrants in Assam and other North Eastern States are the main reasons why Aadhar Cards will not be issued this time. Assam and North Eastern states are prone to illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Recently, UIDAI has been in the midst of controversy wih some objections from Ministry of Home affairs due to security concerns of the safety of the data. Many people also feared that UIDAI Aadhar cards would intrude into privacy of a citizen.
