Protest against Big dams in North East India reaches New Delhi

As per earlier plan, a massive rally against big dams in North East India was organised successfully yesterday in New Delhi by KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) of Assam, famous Narmada Bachao Andolan ( NBA ), National Alliance for People’s Movement (NAPM) braving winter rains on 24th November 2010.

Noted Anti-dam leader Megha Pateker, Akhil Gogoi shouted slogan against big dams in North East India and addressed the huge gathering of people from all over country. Many students from North East India studying in Delhi took part in the rally.

Many MPs ( Member of Parliament) from Assam, mainly the opposition MPs visited to Jantar Mantar to extend their support to the agitation. AGP MPs Biren Baishya, Kumar Deepak Das and Joseph Toppo, besides AUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal made an appearance at the rally in show of solidarity. Yesterday, a delegation of BJP MPs, led by Bijoya Chakravarty joined the agitators at the venue of the rally.

Earlier, addressing the rally, Ajmal said that all the problems arising out of the existing dams should be resolved and construction of all dams should be stopped.

It may be mentioned that, the rally was supposed to gherao Indian parliament yesterday, but the parliament was already closed due to ongoing 3G scam controversy.

It was quite noticeable that ruling Congress Party leaders absented from the protests which is now quite popular among peasants in Assam. Leaders from other political parties seem to be trying to cash it on, specially as the next assembly election in Assam.
