On the occasion of swearing in ceremony of Sarbananda Sonowal as Chief Minister of Assam, firstever BJP CM in Assam and North East India, Chief minister of Assam , Arunachal Pradesh , Nagaland and Sikkim attended a meeting where North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) was formed with Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma as its convener. This political platform, aimed at confronting issues in North East India, seems a masterstroke by BJP leadership in order to wrest power from ruling Congress Party where Congress is ruling in Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram. Tripura is being ruled by Left government.
BJP had been campaigning for CongressMukt Bharat since 2014 general election and so far it seems to be quite successful where it has successfully wrested power from Congress in many states including Maharasthra, Haryana etc.
With Himanta Biswa Sarma as he convener, many feel that BJP will be able to achieve their goal of wresting power from Congress in Manipur, Mizoram either directly or by their allies.
With these states going to polls next year, politics in North East India will be interesting to observe in coming years.
