Earthquake of intensity 6.8 hits North East India

An earth quake measuring 6.8 on Richter scale has hit North East India today at 6.17PM ( Indian Standard Time). Its epicentre has been detected to be Sikkim – Nepal border in Eastern part of India. The tremors was felt through out Northern India, UP, Delhi etc.

So far, no loss of life has been reported but there are reports of many damaged buildings from Gangtok, Sikkim. There are also reports about waves created due to the tremor on river Brahmaputra.

One family in Guwahati reported damage of various household items. Unconfirmed TV reports says 9 people have died in Sikkim so far.

PM Manmohan Singh has spoken to CM of Sikkim and assured of all possible help.

Two aftershocks of magnitude 6.1 and 5.3 are also reported.

Reports coming that two buildings have collapsed in Kolkata.

It may be mentioned that North East India falls into seismic zone V where earthquake is highly likely.
