Ray of hope for justice in Manipur

10 September 2010 could be remarkable day for Manipur in North East India. Two important developments today have taken place. In one incident, 9 Police personnel were charge sheeted by CBI ( Central Bureau of Investigation) in a fake encounter for killing a young boy in Imphal in January, 2009. The accused face murder and other charges.

The writ petition was filed at the Gauhati High Court by Chungkham Taratombi Devi, mother of deceased Chungkham Sanjit Meitei. In her complaint, she had alleged that her son was shot dead by the Manipur Police commandos for no rhyme or reason.

In another important development, the Guwahati High Court has allowed Manipur to re-open the probe of Manorama Devi rape case. 32-year-old Manorama Devi’s brutalised body was found on July 11, 2004.

It is alleged that, Manorama Devi was picked up by jawans of the Assam Rifles without an arrest warrant, allegedly raped and murdered by them.

Manorama Devi rape and murder incident triggered wide spread protest in Manipur.

These two development may help restore faith in Indian justice system in the minds of people in Manipur as well as North East India.
