Irom Sharmila, Iron Lady of Manipur, who has been on hunger strike for more than ten years now, has been released by the chief judicial magistrate of Imphal, Manipur. And she walked out of the security ward of the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) here where she was being forced-fed through the nose by the government forces.
Incidentally, her release coincide with visit of the President of India Mrs. Pratibha Patil to Manipur who has arrived here on official two day visit.
It may be mentioned that, this is not the fist time Irom Sharmila has been released from her arrest, but previously when ever she was released, she was again arrested on charges under IPC 309 ( Attempt to commit suicide). With recent Supreme Court ruling about passive Euthanasia, Indian security forces may find difficult to arrest again!
She has informed that, she would continue her fast demanding repeal of AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958), which is regarded as anti-democratic and condemned by many Human Rights group world wide.
She has been on hunger strike since year 2000 after Assam Rifles personnel killed 10 civilians on November 2, 2000 at Malom village in Imphal West along National Highway 150.
