Twitterati Reacts to PM’s Gujarat Visit-Outraged at lack of appropriate attention to Assam Flood Victims

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off his two day visit to Gujarat, his home state. He also took an aerial survey of the Flood situation in Gujarat and announced an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for next of kin of those killed and Rs. 50,000 for those seriously injured due to floods in Gujarat. Torrential rains in north Gujarat have caused flood in Banaskantha and Patan districts. More than 2500o people have been evacuated from around Sipu and Dantiwada dam regions due to overflow and release of water.

Soon after the announcement, the twiteratti started reacting to it and many were outraged that similar attention is not being given to those affected by Assam Floods. While Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs visited the stated to asses the flood situation, the Prime Minister himself is yet to visit Assam. Assam faces extreme floods every year.

Many in northeast, those affected by floods in Assam, landslides in Arunachal and Manipur await for similar attention and support.

Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress MP (recently suspended) from Assam also pitched and tweeted against the discriminatory attitude

This year more than 80 people have died till yet, with hundred of thousands forced to stay in relief camps. Some even highlighted that announcement of ex gratia aid to the Gujarat Flood victims might be linked to the upcoming elections in the state.

Whatever be the reason, Millions affected in Assam do await for support from the Prime Minister.

Update- On 28th July, the PMO announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 L for those deceased in Assam Floods and Rs 50 k for seriously injured under PMNRF.
