PM Narendra Modi visited Assam today to assess the damage caused by recent floods in Assam and the Northeastern states. In a meeting for over 5 hours, the prime minister was briefed about the situation in Assam and other states affected by floods in northeast. The chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal, Governor Shri Banwarilal Purohit was joined by eminent ministers like Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.
The PM announced a package of Rs. 2000 crore package for restoration of the damage done to infrastructure by the floods. An additional 250 crore was released for immediate rehabilitation of Assam Flood victims. Earlier the PM had announced a package of 345 crore for Assam. The PM also had announced an ex gratia aid of 2 lakh to each deceased and Rs. 50000 to those injured in the floods.
A total of 100 crore has also been granted to evaluate and study the Brahmaputra. A high powered study group will be formed to conduct an extensive research on the Brahmaputra and develop a plan. The findings of the study is expected to guide the flood management work.
