15 Bru refugees charred to death in Tripura

Due to an accidental fire in a Bru refugee camp at Naisinghpara in North Tripura district in North East India, 15 Bru refugees were charred to death and 8 other were injured.

“Fifteen charred bodies of men, women and children were recovered so far from the camp. Fire broke out at about 12 noon and soon engulfed the camp,” DIG Police (Control) Nepal Das.

ATTF splinter group joins NLFT in Tripura

A splinter group of All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) headed by Sachin Debberma has ‘reportedly’ joined hands with its arch rival National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), most powerful outfit in the State.

Sources confirmed that ATTF had suffered a vertical split over sharing of funds leading to exit of self-styled rebel leader Sachin Debbarma from the outfit about one-and-half month ago. Immediately after the split, the ATTF supremo Ranjit Debbarma had taken shelter in an undisclosed location in Bangladesh to skip the attention of law-enforcement agencies.

Somdev wins Gold in Asiad Games

Somdev Devvarman, the ace Tennis player from North East India, has won Gold for India ( India’s Seventh Gold) in ongoing Asian Games Guangzhou city in China. He created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the men’s singles tennis event of the Asian Games after outplaying top seed and world number 44 Denis Istomin 6-1 6-2 in the lop-sided summit clash.

With this win, Somdev won his second gold from the tennis competition, and seventh for India, having already captured yellow metal in the men’s doubles with Sanam Singh. [Read more...]

Education is free in Tripura except Exam fees

“No government, semi-government and government aided schools up to 12th standard are to be allowed to take any kind of fee except the examination charge from the students” is the recent order by education department in Tripura, another tiny state in North East India.

Education is Tripura is going to be free ( almost) except examination fees. And as examination fees ranges from Rs. 20 to Rs. 200, one can say, it is almost free! Very good initiative by Tripura Government when implemented successfully.

Somdev Devvarman from Tripura wins Gold in CWG

Somdev Devvarman, a native of Tripura in North East India became the first Commonwealth Games men’s singles champion after beating Greg Jones of Australia by 6-4, 6-2 today in New Delhi. Congratulation Somdev, you have made North East India proud!

Devvarman, who has broken into the ATP top 100 this year after a successful US college career, had yet to drop a set all week, but he found fifth seed Jones a handful to start with. NE Militants shifting base from Bangladesh to Myanmar

As per recent media reports in North East India, NE militants are shifting their bases from Bangladesh to Myanmar after recent crack down on them by Bangladesh Army. Many people saw it coming as soon as the government change in Dhaka in January 2009 after a landslide victory by Awami League and Sheikh Hasina became new Prime Minister. Sheikh Hasina has been known as pro-India leader who wants good relation with India.

16 Tripura terrorists flee Bangla camps, surrender

As many as 16 dreaded terrorists have fled their camps in Bangladesh and surrendered to Indian troopers in Tripura, police here said on Wednesday.

“The NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) extremists, led by their self-styled captain Kishore Debbarma and self-styled sergeant Raimohan Tripura, crossed over to India early Tuesday,” a police spokesman told reporters.

“They established contact with the BSF (Border Security Force) and Assam Rifles officials at Manikpur in Dhalai district and at Kanchanpur in north Tripura district,” he said.

13 ATTF insurgents surrender in Tripura

Thirteen insurgents of outlawed All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) surrendered before the Assam Rifles here today after fleeing from their base camp in neighboring Bangladesh, police said.

The insurgents said they took the decision following heavy crackdown by security forces in Bangladesh, non payment of their salaries and crisis of food in the camps, according to police.

They handed over 11 AK-47 rifles, 2 SLR, 2 rifles, live cartridges and 24 kgs of explosives, they said.

The 13-member group led by self-styled captain Jagadish Debbarma deposited a cache of arms with the DIG of Assam Rifles Brig ST Upasani in presence of DGP Tripura Selim Ali.

It was the biggest surrender of any insurgent group this year along with arms and ammunition, police claimed.
