Inspiring story from North East India: IAS officer making 100KM road

Armstrong Pame is first IAS ( Indian Administrative Officer) from his Zeme tribe of Tamenglong district in Manipur where he serves as sub-divisional magistrate. He is making a 100KM road now christened Tamenglong-Haflong Road from his home district to Assam which will connect three states, Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. He is constructing the road without any government help.

As per news, government had sanctioned Rs. 101 crore way back in 1982 for the construction of the same road. No news about the money so far, but the road was not constructed and people from villages in Tousem used to walk 60KM for 25KGs of ration which took them about four days. And the ration of 25KGs lasted for about 10 days.

North East People harassed in Delhi during Chinese President’s India visit

With heightened security arrangement in New Delhi for BRIC ( Brazil, Russia India and China) summit being held in New Delhi, people from North East India are getting harassed by Delhi Police because of their facial similarity with Tibetans.

Delhi Police is trying to prevent Tibetans from protesting in front of visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao. So, most probably, in order to please visiting Chinese President, citizens from North East India are getting harassed.

Tibet and North East India: Political pawn between India and China

On 10th March 1959, Tibetan revolted against Chinese rule in Lhasa. After that, on 12 March 1959, Tibetans marched in Lhasa ( Capital of Tibet) declaring independence of Tibet from Chinese rule. Since then, many Tibetans observe 10th March as Tibetan Uprising Day. Predictably, China could contain the uprising by 1962, but Dalai Lama could flee to India and was hosted by Indian government since then.

This also marked a sharp changes in relation between Tibet and India, specially in Tawang which is inside Indian territory as per McMohan line, border between India and China. Buddhists Monastery in Tawang used to pay tribute to Lhasa before 1959 and it showed black flag to Indian Political officer’s visit to Tawang in 1953.

Manipur Blockade : Few observation

For the first time in independent India, a blockade as well as a crisis in North East India ( Manipur) were highlighted in Indian national media and ‘uncomfortable’ questions like ‘would such blockade would have been allowed to go on for 65 days’, ‘are people of North East India are second class citizen’ etc. were asked in national TV talks shows!

There has also been attempt by many people in North East ( specially many Meitei netizens) who tried to create a trending in social media Twitter.com to make people outside North East India aware of this blockade which has caused immense sufferings to common people in Imphal, capital city of Manipur.
