Anjan Barua, son of Himendra Barua of Dighali Majgaon in Dhansiri subdivision of Golaghat district in Assam had committed suicide due to repeated mental and physical torture by Police of Borpathar Police station, alleges the father as per news reports.
Borpathar police station OC Ranjit Morang said Anjan committed suicide consuming some poisonous substance on Friday night. He added that Anjan was arrested in October on charges of indulging in Maoist activities.
Anjan Barua was a member of KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) led by charismatic leader Akhil Gogoi. Himendra Barua claims that his son was in no way connected with the Maoists. “After taking him into custody on charges of having links with the Maoists, police tried to pressurize my son to comment against KMSS general secretary Akhil Gogoi. But Anjan did not give in to the cops’ tactics. As a result, he was repeatedly threatened and tortured by the police,” he said.
Recently, OC Ranjit Moran has been suspended from the post and an judicial enquiry has been ordered. Also a case 12/11 case has been filed against OC Ranjit Moran under IPC 306, as per recent reports.
It is interesting to note that KMSS member is arrested with alleged link with Maoists. If Anajan Baruas father is right in refusing any connection with Maoists, it is quite understandable why Police is hell bent on making him Maoist member! Incidentally, recently, Supreme Court has ruled that being mere member of a banned outfit does not automatically mean a person criminal unless it is proved that he is planing or involved in some violence.
