Pradyut Bora, state general secretary of BJP ( Bharatiya Janata Party) will contest against Himanta Biswa Sarma in Jalukbari constituency in next Assam assembly election. Though Himnata Biswa Sarma’s candidature from Congress has not been made public, but his ticket from Congress is almost certain.
Pradyut Bora is an IIM-A ( Indian Institute of Management – Ahmadabad) and known for spearheading L K Advanis online campaign in last Lok Sabha election in India.
Online community is quite excited about this contest between two promising and young leaders of Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma is educated in prestigious Cotton College, Guwahati and he was also General Secretary of the student union of that college.
Jalukbari Constituency is considered a prestigious seat mainly. Most probably, it is famous because of Guwahati university being located here from where Prafulla Mahanata and his AGP colleagues formed government in 1985.
This seat was once a strong hold of AGP since 1985 and it was won by Himanta Biswa Sarma in 2001 after losing in 1996. He defeated Bhrigu Kumar Phukon who was representing the constituency since 1985.
Pradyut Bora is contesting for the first time form this constituency and he is creating quit an interest among online communities due to his IIM-A background as well as his visibility in online social networking sites, forums. And many opine that he has no chance against Himanta Biswa Sarma though he may earn good will for standing up against Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Himanta Biswa Sarma has nurtured his constituency very well and developed a strong network which Pradyut Bora can not match. Himanta Biswa Sarma was defeated in General Secretary Election by Bhuban Pegu in Cotton College in 1992 when Himanta was contesting to third time. It is no longer student union election and there is no strong anti-Himanta sentiment doing around like that of in 1992 in Cotton College.
Though Akhil Gogoi ( incidentally another ex-general Secretary of Cotton College) may have damaged Himanta Biswa Sarma’s reputation in national or state level with many corruption charges, but it is unlikely that it will influence voters at the constitution level.
Many also opine that why would a voters from a village bother about IIM-A tag while choosing their representative for legislative assembly ?
Still, Pradyut Bora will earn respect (which he had already got by now) and will gain experience from a seasoned politician like Himanta Biswa Sarma.
When informed, Himanta Biswa Sarma replied like a good statesman “@northeastblog Frankly I do not know much abt him except that he studied in IIM.However election in jalukbari will b fought in true spirit”.
We think, if Akhil Gogoi had contested as an independent candidate from Jalukbari, it would have given some sleepless night to Himanta Biswa Sarma!
