As per recent report in Times of India portal which quotes senior intelligence officers, says that Naxalites have expanded their base in lower Assam and Koch Bihar area of West Bengal.
This could compound the already insurgency affected North Eastern states, specially Assam. With recent progress on ULFA-GOI talks, Assam may see some peace, but this report of Maoists creating base in lower Assam and its bordering areas of West Bengal is quite alarming.
Security officers fear that eastern India, especially Bengal and a portion of Assam, will soon turn into the worst Maoist conflict zone.
“They have silently penetrated all districts of south Bengal. Moving from the three districts of Jangalmahal, they now have prominent presence in Birbhum, East Midnapore, Nadia and Murshidabad and have struck roots in North and South 24-Parganas, boarding Kolkata,” said a senior police officer in Bengal.
Also, the Maoists have expanded their base in North Bengal and Assam, say intelligence officers. The Reds are linking up with ethnic insurgent groups like Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO) and a section of Ulfa and have already floated frontal outfits there. The information came from Chila Roy, a KLO operative who was rounded up in Siliguri recently, say sources.
