Malayala Manorama “apologizes for mistakes”

Makes shocking claim that misinformation of NE in Government of India published “India, 2012”

New Delhi, 8th July, 2013: The editorial team of Manorama Yearbook 2013 today tendered their written apology for the mistakes in their Yearbook 2013, following a complaint (attached is the copy of the complaint letter) by North East India Image Managers (NEIim) on the matter on 5th of July, 2013. In an email to NEIim, a senior editorial team member of the Yearbook published by the Malayala Manorama group, said that “it was never a deliberate misinformation campaign” and committed that “all the corrections pointed out and any other, if left out, will be carried out in the forthcoming edition”. However, NEIim persist with its initial demand of withdrawal of Manorama Yearbook, 2013 from the market as it’ll be promoting wrong information about the region. This will also be against customer interest that is paying to buy genuine and accurate information which is lacking with the current Manorama Yearbook, 2013.
Interestingly, the mail made a shocking claim that such gross misrepresentation of the geography and culture of Northeast Indian states are sometimes sourced from Government of India publications like ‘India 2012’, the yearbook published by the Union Information & Broadcasting Ministry.

The letter specifically said that the wrong information regarding the name of the airport in North Lakhimpur in Assam was sourced from “Airport: Govt. of India Publication, India 2012, which mentions Salonbari as having airport. Lilabari is not mentioned.”

It is to be noted that the popular year book in its current form, which is followed especially by students preparing for competitive examinations and also by those who want to enhance their general knowledge about India, contains shocking mistakes and misrepresentation of facts about the state of Assam and other states of North East India. Taking cognizance of this, the North East India Image Managers (NEIim), a group of communication professionals, sent a letter (copy of the letter attached) to the editorial team of the Malayala Manorama protesting about the misinformation and demanding its immediate correction.
Reacting to the reply from the Manorama Yearbook, NEIim said in a statement, “We appreciate their apology for the wrong information that was published in their Manorama Yearbook, 2012. However, it is shocking for us to learn that they have sourced some information on North East from Govt. of India’s “India, 2012” that turned out to be inaccurate. While we are happy to see that the esteemed publication has acknowledged their mistake and offered to make correction in their forthcoming editions, it makes us equally worried about publication’s reason that miss-representation of facts in Govt of India’s publication “India, 2012.”
The Manorama Yearbook, which is published in English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil & Malayalam, caters to the knowledge of thousands of young minds.
