Divisional Forest Officer of Dhemaji district, Assam arrested with Tiger Skin

A divisional Forest Officer ( DFO ) of Assam’s Dhemaji district, Mahat Chandra talukdar has been arrested on corruption charges by Anti-Corruption Wing of Assam Police on Monday 13th June 2016. Incidentally Mahat in Assamese means “great”.

There wwere multiple allegation against the corrupt DFO but some youth businessmen Himshekhar Khandelia, Manas Das and Khagen Gogoi, based in Dhemaji gave complaint to SP Swapnaneel Deka of Dhemaji district. Then SP Deka contacted anti-corruption wing of Guwahati and they trapped the DFO for taking Rs.30,000 as bribe.

Later, Anti-Corruption wing has searched various houses of the DFO in Dhemaji, Guwahati and his ancestral house in Nalbari where they have recovered huge quantity of cash. So far, it has recovered more than three crore in cash. Police had to take help from bank officials to count the cash stashed in almirah in Mahat Talukdars house.

Apart from cash, skin of Royal Bengal Tiger, deer and even horn of Rhino have been recovered from DFO house. Many social organisations in Assam have welcome this arrest of corrupt officer and demanded punishment to him. It may be mentioned that Rhino Killing has been a sensitive issue in Assam and this DFO has also been posted in world famous Kaziranga National park before at various capacities.
