On last Monday, 9th July 2012 evening, a girl from Guwahati, studying in Class X1, was molested by group of men when she came out of a bar in busy GS Road in Guwahati, Assam. The incident was captured on camera by a reporter from NewsLive TV, a local TV channel based in Guwahati.
This video went viral on internet and after that there was a nationwide outrage. The incident also got wide publicity in Delhi based TV channels, and #Guwahati started trending in Twitter.
The chief editor of the NewsLive TV uploaded three part video of the molestation and faced wide criticism for uploading those videos instead of trying to save the girl. He defended by his twitter page that reporters recorded it for evidence for police.
Meanwhile, activists have put up hoarding of the culprits from the video footage in Guwahati city urging citizens to come forward, identify and help police nab them. According to City SP, Longit Teron, four of the 11 identified culprits have been arrested and assured that others would be arrested too.
Union Home Minister had told reporters that, he condemns any such molestation and would ask Assam Chief Minister what actions are being taken. National Women Commission is sending a team to Guwahati for investigating the incident.
Many political leaders like leader of opposition, Sushma Swaraj, Brinda Karat have condemned the incidence and had promised to take up the issue to bring it to its logical conclusion by punishing the culprits.
