Bulk SMS banned in Assam

The Assam government has banned bulk SMS system in the state, with an aim to prevent the facility becoming a platform for instigating public in context to any political or social happening. The administration has directed the service providers to enforce this ban.

Recently, it has been experienced that cell phones have been turning a tool to pitch one’s voice and popularize a thought. Mobile service providers in the state have been asked to ban bulk SMS system. After the circulation of the order all leading mobile companies dispatched emails to their offices across Assam.

The move of the govt hot on the heels of the Last Gate riots on June 22 and the arrest of Akhil Gogoi is being seen as a step aimed at preventing people to get engaged in a already high-octane drama. These bulk SMSes have been becoming a rage during any event that arrested public interest at a high magnitude. This bulk messaging system sent out a message to a mobile customer within seconds. Even during election campaigns these SMSes came out to be handy for candidates to spread their message clear to everybody. These acted as a carrier of their manifestos.

However, the ban is a clear indication that this has been done keeping in view the law and order situation in the state. Earlier, the Centre had banned all bulk SMS and MMS across India in view of the impending verdict on Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits. The latest move is a first of its kind in Assam.
