AIUDF Opposes making Assam a tribal state

AIUDF ( All India United Democratic Front ) has come out with press release opposing statement of Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Assam, who recently opined that he has no objection to Assam becoming a tribal state.

Assam Chief Minister was reacting to recent development in ULFA-GOI talks where ULFA pro-talk group led by Arabinda Rajkhowa had demanded granting ST status to six ethnic communities of Assam. By granting ST status six more communities of Assam, it may become tribal dominated state.

In a press statement issued today, AIUDF general secretary and MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Kasimi said, “It has come to our notice that on Friday the Chief Minister, during a press conference, stated that there is no objection if Assam becomes a tribal state. We never expected this kind of a statement from the Chief Minister of a State like Assam.”

Kasimi said the party wants ULFA cadres to rejoin the mainstream and the State to prosper. “However, to deprive more than half of the State’s population of their political and other rights by making Assam a tribal state is something which will not be acceptable to everybody,” he said.
