While many political parties in Assam have been urging Election Commission of India to conduct next assembly election before Bihu ( around 14th April 2011), Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Qureshi will visit Assam this week along with his team to assess situation here.
It is reported that main opposition party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) may come out with its first list of candidates for coming assembly election where it has least controversy while choosing candidate.
According to insiders, AGP may induct new faces this time in selected constituencies. Naba Kumar Doley is one such candidate who is likely to take on Bharat Narah in Dhakuakhana constituency. Bharat Narah has not lost this seat since 1985 when he first contested with AGP ticket. Later, he switched to Congress and has been winning this seat continuously. Naba Kumar Doley is a formidable candidate to give tough fight to Bharat Narah in this reserved constituency.
AGP may finalise as many as 40 candidates by the end of of this week. As usual, Congress is expected to finalise their list of candidates till the last moment to reduce dissidents.
Recently, Brindaban Guswami, former AGP president and opposition leader has become active again and will campaign for AGP.
