76 people have been reportedly killed on the eve of 23 Dec 2014 in Assam’s Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts when alleged NDFB(Songbijit faction) opened fire on villagers indiscriminately. In Sonitpur district alone, at least 37 people have been killed which includes 15 women, 18 children. In Kokrajhar district, at Ultapani village, 25 people have been killed.Those killed belong to Adivasi and Santhal community who were brought to Assam a century ago by Britishers as tea plantation laborers from Indian states like Jharkhand, Odisha etc.
On 24th Dec 2014, many Adivasi people gheraoed police station at Dhekiajuli where Police had to open fire killing 5 people and injuring 11 more. In another retaliatory attack by Adivasi people, two people belonging to Bodo tribes were also killed in Kokrajhar district.
Thousands of people, belonging to both Bodo and Adivasi community have taken shelter in temporary relief camps like schools, churches fearing more attack/retaliatory attacks.
NDFVB(S) is hardline faction of NDFB groups which is not in talks with government of India and has not surrendered so far.
Indian Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had reached in the evening of 24th Dec 2014 and held talks with Assam CM Tarun Gogoi. PM Narendra Modi had announced Rs. 2lac compensation to next kin of those killed and Rs. 50000 for those injured.
There has been widspread condemnation from many organiation in Assam, President Pranab Mukherjee for the killing. CM Tarun Gogoi had urged people to remain calm and insisted that the first priority is to prevent any further killing.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla was reportedly in Kaziranga National Park with family for elephant safari on the eve of 23 Dec 2014 as well as in the morning of 24 Dec 2014 and could reach Guwahati only after 1PM to take stock of the situation. This has also led to many condemnation from every quarters.
Indian Government has given green signal to go ahead with massive crackdown operation against NDFB(S). NIA, National Investigation Agency, will investigate these killing, as per government sources.
