Gerukamukh Dam And KMSS, Akhil Gogoi etc.

As the completion of NHPC’s 2000MW hydel power project nearing completion at Gerukamukh, Assam-Arunachal Border, the agitation led by KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) too seems to be peaking. Recently, KMSS has threatened economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal( West) MP Takam Sanjay of Congress has retorted by demanding to ban KMSS on national interest!

Recently, many vehicles carrying equipments to project site at Gerukamukh have been stranded on NH52 at various places due to blockade created by KMSS and its supporting organisations. Among its supporting organisations, TMPK ( Takam Mising Porin Kebang or All Mising Student Union) has large population living on the banks of river Subansiri for centuries!

Mising is the community who majorly born the causalities and devastation in 1950 earth quake and the flood aftermath. They also compose almost 70% of the population in Majuli, famous as worlds largest river island as well as Vasinavite satras. This island faces threat of extinction as per KMSS in case the dam at Gerukamukh is breached!

Akhil Gogoi, and RTI activist of national repute is general secretary of KMSS, who is also a member in Anna Hazare’s core team. He has a long story of agitation and is now a days know as a professional agitator who keeps on taking up issues in order to be in agitation business. This idea was first muted by Himanta Biswa Sarma, who claimed that Akhil Gogoi is a professional agitator and conduct rallies, dharnas for a living. This term has now got wide acceptanceamong scribes based in Guwahati too.

Meanwhile, the villages in and around Gerukamukh, like Ukhamati, Mingmang, Borola etc. ( inhabited by Mising tribe) are still in dark, without any electricity connections.
