Arunachal Pradesh journalists go on indefinite strike

The front pages of all the dailies in Arunachal Pradesh appeared blank today in protest against the government’s failure to arrest the persons involved in the recent attacks on two senior reporters with The Sentinel’s Arunachal Pradesh edition. Northeastblog.in has also decided to put a blank white image supporting this strike.

Members of the media fraternity today staged a dharna on the market complex here. They condemned the growing attacks on mediapersons and the government’s silence on the matter. Members of the press, led by the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) and Arunachal Press Club (APC), have resolved to go on indefinite pen-down strike until the arrest of the culprits.

Appu Gapak and Nyapi Bomjen, senior reporters with The Sentinel’s Arunachal Pradesh edition, were assaulted by unidentified miscreants at around 8.15 pm on December 12 last in a place between Naharlagun and Itanagar on the National Highway 52A. The following day, the APC and the APUWJ had lodged a strong protest with the Capital Complex administration and issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government for the arrest of the culprits.
