Anti-Bodoland Protest in Assam

There has been reports recently about agitation against proposed Bodoland as well as protest against inclusion of BTAD ( Bodoland Territorial Administrative Districts) in parts of BTAD areas, like Dheiajuli. As per reports, Sonitpur District Minority students union has blocked NH-52 for more than three hours protesting against harassment faced by them as well as opposing inclusion of their villages in BTAD.

They also demanded that their villages should be governed under Assam government directly. The President and secretary, Sonitpur district AAMSU submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through DC, Sonitpur demanding effective steps to maintain law and order in BTAD and other parts of north Assam.

Indian PM recent visit to Myanmar and Insurgents in North East

After 25 years, an Indian PM visited Myanmar when Dr. Manmohan Singh visited its eastern neighbour Myanmar on 27 May 2012. During the visit, he even met Aung San Suu Kyi, opposition leader, and Nobel Peace Prize winner who had spent years in house arrest as she led pro-democracy agitation for decades.

With recent, opening up of Myanmar to the democratic world after facing sanction from western countries led by USA, this visit by an Indian PM is significant and timely. As expected, Indian PM could get assurance from Myanmar government a promise which says, Myanmar will not allow North Eastern insurgents group to establish and operate training camp in Myanmar.

SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for using Racial Slur on North East People

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sent a letter to all the states and Union Territories, asking them to book offenders guilty of atrocity against people from the region under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act since a significant number of persons from the North-East belong to the Scheduled Tribes, as per India Today report.

There was mass protest against alleged discrimination against people of North Eastern part of India after two students died, one in Bangalore another in NCR. Even a chief minister of Meghalaya had protested against racial discrimination in a media briefing in Delhi.
