Today is Me-Dam-Me-Phi Festival in Assam

Today ( 31 January ) is one of the most auspicious festival of Ahom community in Assam. Me-Dam-Me-Phi is a very sacred ritual of the Ahom community in Assam and literally it means oblations offered to the dead and sacrifices to the gods.
This festival of the Ahoms in honour of their ancestors also answers questions pertaining to the immortal soul of man, the Supreme Soul and union of the immortal soul with the Supreme Soul. This ritual was also observed by the Ahom kings on many occasions for averting any imminent danger, commemorating victory and desiring longevity of life.

Will China resurrect insurgency in North East India ?

Recent reports in news papers suggest that, anti-talks factions of insurgent groups are forging ties with each other and China is acting as chief interlocutor among them. With recent reverses by China at international levels by India, we had opined that China might step up ‘Insurgency in North East India’ card very soon.

It may be mentioned that, around 1600 cadres of nine insurgent groups have laid down arms recently in Assam. ULFA has also suffered great setback recently due to formal divisions among its top ranks and Paresh Barua Led anti-talk factions constituting new central body.

North Eastern states unlikely to get Aadhar Cards

All North Eastern states except Tripura are unlikely to get Aadhar Cards ( An identity card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India or UIDAI). It was decided after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Unique Identification Authority of India related issues (CC-UIDAI) chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, held on 27 Jan 2012 in New Delhi.

Briefing newsmen, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and deputy chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia said that in all cases the NPR data base would prevail. However, Aadhaar numbers would prevail in those States where it has been issued. And in rest of the States, the NPR exercise would continue.

North East Curtural Centre set up in New Delhi

Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Paban Singh Ghatowar and Union Minister for Culture, Kumari Selja had inaugurated North-East Cultural Centre, located at Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), Dwarka, New Delhi on 24th Jan 2012. The centre is the outcome of an assurance made by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to a delegation of youths from the North-East on October 10, 2009.

This is an effort by North Eastern Council and CCRT and facilitated by Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region to promote and educate rich cultural heritage of North Eastern India.

North East Insurgency at crossroads ?

Indian government has been actively pursuing multi-pronged strategy to contain insurgency and separatism in North East India for long and finally, it seems to be bearing fruit. Indian government has engaged Military Junta of Myanmar, covertly helped new Bangldesh India friendly government, impressed upon Bhutan to act against North Eastern insurgents. All seem to be working.

Recent announcements by both Bhutan government and Myanmar government about not allowing its soil to use militant activities against India has been testimony to it. Bangladesh had almost completely dismantled ULFA infrastructure and arrested its top leaders.

Junbil Mela in Assam

Junbil Mela is a “trade fair” held yearly at Junbeelpar, four kilometer from Jagirod, in Morigaon district of middle Assam. This trade fair is normally held after Magh Bihu, in the month of January every year. The main attraction of this fair is the “barter system”! No currency is used in this fair. The “King of Gobha” declares holding of this fair.

The trade fair is believed to be started collectively by the ‘kings’ of Gobha, Chahari, Nelie, Pachim Nagaon, Dimorua etc. Now a days, only the Tiwa King of Gobha declares the start of the junbil mela.
