12 Hour Assam Bandh Called

The Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad has called upon 12hour Assam bandh tomorrow against alleged derogatory comments of Atanu Bhuyan, editor-in-chief of News Live. Bhuyan allegedly put derogatory comments about the Ahom community young women on popular net-working site Face Book.

All the Ahom community organization burnt down effigy of journalist Bhuyan, yesterday at Jorhat besides registering a criminal case against him.The Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, demanding immediate arrest of Bhuyan said they would raise further protest if he is not arrested soon. On the other hand, Bhuyan said that it is a conspiracy against him.

India Today puts flood in Lakhimpur, Nauboicha to be of Uttar Pradesh

One of the most respected English weekly magazine, India Today has again reported about flood news from Assam to be that of Uttar Pradesh! Lakhimpur and Nowboicha as well as other areas of north bank of Brahmpautra in Assam has been in news for flood for some time now and India Today magazine too published a small news about flood in Assam, but they got the state wrong, once again!

The report is published on page 16 of 1st August 2011 edition which reads ” Affected by floods over one lakh people in 90 villges in Lakhimpur and Nauboicha circles of Lakhimpur district, Uttar Pradesh.”

North East Sportsperson neglected for Arjuna Award

Consecutive Gold Medal winner Renubala Chanu, who won gold medal in weight lifting in Commonwealth Games in 2006 in Melbourne as well as in 2011 in New Delhi, has decided to return her medals to sports ministry after she was ignored for prestigious Arjuna Award.

It may be mentioned that, K Ravi Kumar, who won gold medal in weight lifting in last Cmmonwealth Games in New Delhi, is the only one to win Arjuna Award who belongs to Weight Lifting category.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s Foreign Visit

As usual Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, once again mocks people’ plight. The state chief minister Tarun Gogoi has taken another foreign visit at a time when flood situation in the state deteriorates rendering thousands of people homeless.

The chief minister has taken this visit arguing that the motif of his visit to observe the education system of the developed countries. Accordingly he left Guwahati today. He will leave Delhi tomorrow at 6-40 A.M. for London.After that he will visit Switzerland and France.

Will Frontier Nagaland be reality now ?

Recently, Nagaland Government has recommended the Central government to create Sixth Schedule area comprising of our border districts of the State in view of the demand by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) for a separate ‘Frontier Nagaland.

The decision to recommend the creation of the autonomous council under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution was taken at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on 23rd Jul 2011.

Flood in Assam and Big Dams in North East India

Recent report says that at least 3.3lacs people in Assam’s flood prone districts Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and other districts Jorhat, Barpeta have been displaced or rendered homeless by flood. These floods were mainly caused by incessant rains in Arunachal Pradesh hills as well as in the plains of Assam.

But it is not only rain which causes flood in Lakhimpur District. Assam and whole of North East India rains well for centuries now and Cherapunji in Meghalaya boasts of the wettest place one earth. With this kind of free information available, Ranganadi dam was constructed to produce 405MW of power over Ranga nadi river Arunachal Pradesh known as Dikrong river in Lakhimpur district of Assam.

Chekrovolu Swuro makes North East India proud

Chekrovolu Swuro. the archer from Nagaland, is part of Indian National Women Archery team had won silver medal at the World Championships in Turin, Italy recently and made North East India proud. She is also employed as Assistant Sub-Inspector in the Nagaland Police.

Nagaland Chief Minister has announced a cash award of Rs 3 lakh in recognition of her recent feat at an international level. Chekrovolu is scheduled to leave for the United States in a few days time to represent the country in another event.

Flood in Assam

With incessant rains in northern bank of Assam and Arunahal Pradesh, the yearly flooding has started in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur districts of Assam on Northern bank of Brahmaputra. The tributaries of Brahmaputra river, Subansiri, Ranga Nadi, Nonoi etc. are flowing much above danger level.

As usual, NH-52, that goes through all these districts, have bee damaged and Lakhimpur as well as Dhemaji districts have been cut off from rest of India by road.
