Admission in Delhi for North East Students

A co-ordination committee meeting was held yesterday in New Delhi between resident commissioners of North Eastern states and Delhi University authorities in order to discuss admission procedure for new admission procedures for various courses during academic session 2011-2012.

Prof. Suman Verma, Joint Dean, Students Welfare and Examinations informed that a Teachers Counsellors and Senior Students Help Desk will assist the aspiring students during registration and admission at all the four centres. Prof. Verma sought cooperation from the Resident Commissioners of concerned states. The rules and regulations and other important issues relating to admission procedures for the students of North Eastern States seeking admission in Delhi University were discussed in the meeting.

Indian Government finally woke up to plebiscite call in Manipur

Finally, when call for plebiscite in Manipur gained enough momentum as well as widespread support, which many opine an option to end insurgency in Manpur, government of India seems to have woken up and demanded action t be taken against such demands.

It may be noted that, recently, many mainstream political leaders joined activists, social organisation supporting the demand for a plebiscite to decide future of Manipur with India. Even Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh had opined that plebiscite is good beginning for ending insurgency in Manipur.

Binayak Sen demands repeal of AFSPA

Binayak Sen, the controversial doctor cum civil rights activist has demanded repeal of Armed Forces Special Power Act – 1958 ( AFSPA) “A large number of human rights organizations have joined hands to oppose the sedition law and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA),” Sen said at a felicitation function in Kalyani in West Bengal.

Binayak Sen was granted bail on 15 April 2011 by the Supreme Court after being sentenced to life imprisonment by Chhattisgarh court on charges of sedition and alleged links with Maoists in central India.

Anna Hazare pledges support of Repeal of AFSPA

Anna Hazare, a Gandhian, who recently shot to fame and media limelight due to hunger strike in support of Lokpal bill implementation in New Delhi, took part in a anti-corruption rally in Guwahati AEI ground and pledges support for repeal of AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Power Act 1958), a much infamous draconian law, initially enacted to fight Naga insurgency in North East and now extended to Jammu and Kashmir.

Asked to express his opinion on the ‘draconian’ Act by peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi at the ‘Rally Against Corruption’ organised by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity, the noted Gandhian said that he would press for the repeal of the Act.

Nyishi Students Union demands removal of Sentinel Office from Itanagar

All Nyishi Students Union ( ANSU ) has demanded that the Sentinel Arunachal Office be removed from Nyishi inhabited areas like Itanagar and other areas. ANSU has also demanded that Arunachal Press Club and CEO of the newspaper in question Jarpum Gamlin resign from his post as president of the club.

It may me mentioned that, on fourth May 2011, Times of India published an article about Nabum Tuki, PCC president and PWD minister, who lost the race to Chief Minister as “Nyishi tribe which doesn’t enjoy good rapport among other tribes” to which Nabum Tuki belongs.

Pasighat – oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh

Pasighat is oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh which was established in 1911 after Britishers defeated Adi tribes in Anglo-Abor war. APO ( Assistant Political Officer was then appointed to look after the area including present day Jonai subdivision of Assam up to McMohan lines established in 1914. 100 years of its existence was celebrated in February this year.

Pasighat is picturesque town with around 25 thousand population on the bank of mighty Siang river. Sinag river takes name Lali while entering Assam and then becomes Brahmaputra, the only male river in India.

Lack of Unity among North Eastern communities : NESO

Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjee, Chairman of North East Students’ Organisation, has expressed that there is a lack of unity among communities in North Eastern region and it is now time to reach out to each other.

Speaking on the last day of the just concluded 24th General Conference of Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) at Pfutsero town recently, Dr Samujjal stated that the rest of the country abuses the North East as a region where the ethnic groups lack unity while the Government of India considers it as an advantage for their administrative purposes.

ULFA-Government talks likely in June 2011

With Congress government coming back to power in Assam, the ongoing peace talks between ULFA and Government may no take place in June, as per Asomiya Pratidin ( an Assamese daily, published from Guwahati) report. Even Tarun Gogoi who has led Congress for Hat-trick in Assam, had told reporters that, his priority would be to continue the peace process in Assam.

It is also reported that pro-talk ULFA leaders would visit Dhaka to convince Anup Chetia, one of founder member of ULFA and currently lodged in Dhaka jail, for participation in the peace talks.
