N C Hills Scam in Assam

Recently, N C Hills ( North Cachar Hills), now known as Dima Hasao District has seen major scams amounting thousands of crores and it has surely put present ruling Congress Government on back foot. The scam is quite simple,

“According to the Finance Department of the State Government, Rs 151 crore, Rs 40 lakh and Rs 11 thousand were released to the Council’s eight departments within the 26 months. But the audit team has found that Rs 424 crore 4 lakh 43 thousand has been released by the State government, which is Rs 272 crore 64 lakh and 23 thousand more than the account presented by the Government.”

Most appalling part is, CM of Assam had always denied any such sanction and incidentally the CM has the Finance portfolio too!

Cancellation of LSHEP public hearing evident as ToR negated

It happens only in India, and now it is happening in Arunachal Pradesh right under everybody’s nose. On August 3, 2010, the Ministry of Environment and Forests had granted Terms of Reference for the 2700 MW Lower Siang project to conduct EIA studies.

Amongst other things the MoEF had clarified that: “In essence the developers have to carry out a comprehensive study covering three seasons’ base line data for downstream impact study upto confluence with Brahmaputra river”. The project authorities- Jaypee Associates have completed a comprehensive downstream impact assessment over three seasons in three months flat! WAPCOS, a public sector enterprise under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Water Resources has prepared the Downstream Impact Assessment Report for Jaypee.

Vishal Apologises to AASU : Admits donating with pleasure

Vishal Megamart met AASU ( All Assam Student Union) leaders and tendered written apology to them and the tussle between them came to logical end today. Vishal Megamart COO Manshu Tandon and their retail chain president Pawan Agarwal, also announced in their written statement that the Vishal outlet would remain closed throughout the State tomorrow, ‘as a mark of their goodwill and respect for the people of Assam.’

The Vishal authorities clarified that they have been contributing to the AASU ‘at their own pleasure.’ There has never been any demand. They also acknowledged the useful social activities of AASU for all sections of the people of Assam.

Politicians waking up to plight of North East Indians in Delhi

Finally, leaders from various national political parties as well as cabinet ministers from North East India have woken up to the plight people from North East India face in India’s capital city New Delhi, as they are seen condemning the recent gang rape of North East Indian woman.

Minister of Mines and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Bijoy Krishna Handique, has called for a complete overhaul of security measures for female employees of NE Region working in the BPO sector in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi. His ministry has also assured that, DONER would write to government of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to take up the issue with the BPO industry.

North East Indian women face racial abuse in Delhi

Recent gang rape of woman from Manipur, North East Indian state, considered as sports powerhouse contributing many medals won by India at international level but never recognised, has brought the debate to table again, if people with Mongoloid looks from North East India face racial discrimination in ‘India’ or mainland India ?

AASU extortion allegation, donation, vandalism of Vishal Megamart

As per recent report, AASU ( All Assam Student Union) activists vandalised Vishal Megamart, a low cost shopping mall chain, at many cities across Assam yesterday demanding their public apology for leaking a tapped conversation between Vishal Megamart executive and AASU advisor, Samujjal Bhattacharyya. The tap was leaked by some newly formed student body in Guwahati where many quarters alleged that AASU is extorting money in the name of donation.

AASU leaders retorted that they collect donations from various business house in Assam and there is nothing wrong in collecting donations. Concerned citizens opine that, the contribution of AASU in socio-cultural causes in Assam. [Read more...]

Woman from North East India gangraped in Delhi Again : Letter from a NE youth

As per recent news in Times Of India, a woman from India’s North Eastern state, Manipur, aged 30 years, was gang-raped by four drunken men near Dhaula Kuan and gangraped for over 40 minutes in a moving vehicle early on Wednesday morning. The woman was forced into the vehicle near Nanakpura gurdwara at 1.21am and found in a semi-conscious state in Mongolpuri Industrial Estate at 2am.

According to the police, the woman has been staying in the area for the past four years. She and her colleague, also from the northeast, had told the cab driver to drop them outside the gate of their colony at 1.15am. [Read more...]

Protest against Big dams in North East India reaches New Delhi

As per earlier plan, a massive rally against big dams in North East India was organised successfully yesterday in New Delhi by KMSS ( Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) of Assam, famous Narmada Bachao Andolan ( NBA ), National Alliance for People’s Movement (NAPM) braving winter rains on 24th November 2010.

Noted Anti-dam leader Megha Pateker, Akhil Gogoi shouted slogan against big dams in North East India and addressed the huge gathering of people from all over country. Many students from North East India studying in Delhi took part in the rally.
