AFSPA is required, says Indian General

According to outgoing Lt. General Yadava, Assam Rifles Chief, says that AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Power Act, 1958) is very much required for battling insurgency in North East India. While another top India Police Officer, now Governor of Meghalaya R S Mooshahari disagrees.

Indian Security Forces, armed with AFSPA, is still battling for last 50 years, but insurgency is almost as severe as it was some 50 years back, most probably, AFSPA has not been quite useful in battling insurgency in North East India.

Arunachal Government Revokes Issue of PRC to non APST

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister on 29th Sep 2010 revoked the earlier decision of issuing PRC ( Permanent Residential Certificate) to NON-APST in Changlang and Lohit districts. There were huge hue and cry and protest over this PRC issue, led by AAPSU ( All Arunachal Pradesh Student Union).

Chief Minister Khandu convened a hurried press conference with presence of Chowna Mein, Takar Marde, Setong Sena, Kalikho Pul and Atum Welly, his ministerial co colleagues. This move is welcome by all.

Irom Sharmila : Towards 10 years of hunger strike

On 2 November 2010, Ms. Irom Sharmila Chanu, ( Known as Iron Lady of Manipur), will complete ten years of hunger strike demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA). An extraordinary struggle of an extraordinary woman!

Irom Chanu Sharmila began her protest after the Malom massacre where 10 civilians were gunned down by the Indian security Forces on 2 November 2000. She has been on hunger strike since then! But, Indian Government has not taken steps to repeal AFSPA so far.

Bombile is new terror in Assam!

The rumours swept like wildfire accross assam, with news paper headlines and chain messages warning the receiver not to answer calls from “UNKNOWN NUMBERS”, which would be in red colour. Or else “you may get brain haemorrhage due to high frequency,” the texts read. They also claimed few people injured just receiving the call.

According to the news mysterious phenomenon of the latest phrase ‘Bombile’ which is an explosion of mobile phones are leaving users unconscious in Assam. Sources said these bizzare cases is terrorizing people to the extent that many have literally switched off their handsets.

Uttam Teron makes it to India Today's 35 youth icons in India

Uttam Teron, the person behind Parijat Academy at Pamohi village just outskirt of Guwahati city has made it to the list of 35 Indian youth icons. Uttam Teron has established Parijat Academy in 2003 for four poor children in Pamohi village with Rs. 800 which has now more than 500 students along with 17 staff members.

“We thought such an education center would help the children and if we try to focus on their various discipline it will benefit them to move forward. They can go for further studies and be able to write, they will be able to give their signature instead of thumb impression while opening bank accounts. Guwahati in top 10 cities in terms of IT collection growth in India

Guwahati is among top 10 growing cities in terms of personal income tax collection as per data made available by Income Tax department of India, as per Times Of India report. Incidentally, except Bangalore, none of the metros have made it to the top ten list.

Patna tops the list with 95% growth from year 2009 to year 2010, followed by Lucknow, Meerut which occupies the first three in the list. Guwahati is at seventh position with 23% growth of personal income tax collection in the same period. [Read more...]

Paresh Barua says 20 ULFA deserted camp in Bangladesh

While Indian intelligence officials claim, Bangladesh arrested 20 ULFA (United Front Of Assam) members and 9 of their family members, Paresh Barua, the lone founder member of ULFA outside Indian jail, has termed it as ‘desertion’.

According to Indian Intelligence officials, Anu Buragohain, Bhaiti Baruah, Biju Deka, and Pradyut Buragohain were arrested by Bangladesh security agencies among others on Wednesday. [Read more...]
